As someone who is used to eating out a lot, it’s safe to say I’m REALLY missing it during lockdown. Luckily some places that I love near me are still open for business (House of Zen I’m looking at you), as are places that I’ve yet to try like Kogarashi.
I’ve often drooled over photos of their bao buns on my Insta feed and after walking past their stall on my last trip to the Quayside Market back in February, I decided I’d have to try them in the near future. Lockdown looked like it was going to ruin that plan until Kogarashi answered all prayers a few weeks ago and decided to do DIY bao box deliveries!
When I spotted the announcement on their Instagram and realised they delivered to me (they deliver within a 20 mile radius of Newcastle), it was a no brainer – I was getting one of those boxes.
Each week Kogarashi will be adding different kits to their website and delivering Wednesday to Saturday between 12pm and 6pm. When we saw that this week they’d added pork belly kits, it seemed the right choice for a Saturday night treat! At the time of ordering you’re asked to choose your preferred delivery day, and once your day arrives the Kogarashi team text you around 40 minutes before arrival to give you a heads up. Easy as that!
The DIY kits contain everything you need to make their popular bao buns in the comfort of your own home. You also receive a set of instructions to help you finish sorting the ingredients, which is super easy to follow.
The pork kit contained 8 bao buns, a chunk of 4-hour slow braised pork belly, some pickled cucumber, spring onions, coriander, chilli, crushed peanuts, hoisin sauce, garlic mayo and sesame seeds so it’s safe to say you can pack your buns with plenty flavour! They’re so easy and fun to assemble too.
I’m so glad that I finally got to try Kogarashi’s bao buns and can’t wait to try them again, whether it’s another a delivery or a trip to their stall in the future. Bloody lovely and I’d definitely recommend checking them out!
