Heathers The Musical: Review, Stockton Globe

Dear Diary… Heathers the Musical has been a show that I’ve wanted to see for so long and I’m so glad I finally got to see it on opening night in Stockton!

I took a trip to Westerberg High, via Stockton Globe, for the darkly hilarious musical and, let me tell you, it certainly didn’t disappoint.

The show, produced by Bill Kenwright Ltd and Paul Taylor-Mills, is based on the 80s cult classic film and has become a big cult success itself after a West End run and two national tours!

Set in 1989, the story follows Veronica Sawyer who longs for an easy life in her final year of high school. She ends up being taken under the wings of the Heathers – Heather Chandler, Heather Duke and Heather McNamara – the resident mean girls of Westerberg. Her dreams of being popular begin to come true until mysterious JD turns up in town and changes everything…

Heathers the Musical is wickedly funny but still manages to raise awareness when dealing with such dark themes. Bullying, peer pressure, murder and suicide – there is no shying away from them, but with a high energy, rock soundtrack and laugh out loud moments, the audience manage to enjoy every dark twist and turn the narrative throws at them. The soundtrack is genius and one that I will be listening to on repeat for the foreseeable!

The simple set works brilliantly for the surreal sequences and dance numbers, and the use of lighting is so effective. Costumes are also amazing and I very much would like to dress like the Heathers…

I have to end by talking about the incredible cast! Every single cast member on that stage made an impression on me, they were all superb and their voices were outstanding – especially Amy Miles who played Martha. Her voice was stunning!

Special shout outs to Ivan Fernandez Gonzalez and Jason Battersby who played Kurt and Ram as they had me in stitches the whole time.

Jenna Innes and Keelan McAuley were, of course, the stars of the show as Veronica and JD. Their chemistry on stage was incredible and their harmonies gave me goosebumps.

I honestly loved every second of Heathers the Musical and already can’t wait to see it again.

The show runs until Saturday 19th October at Stockton Globe and tickets are still available here

Huge thank you to the team at Stockton Globe for a night of BIG FUN! Consider me a corn nut!
