I’m always happiest when I’m stuffing my face with pizza so when I was invited along to PizzaExpress in Jesmond to check out their newly refurbished restaurant, I certainly wasn’t going to decline the offer!
Residing on Osborne Road, the popular pizzeria has recently re-opened its doors after undergoing a makeover, making it one of the first in the UK to showcase the new ‘test and learn’ brand proposition. As soon as you walk into the restaurant the first thing you see is the new open kitchen, surrounded by festoon lighting, which takes centre-stage at the heart of the pizzeria. It’s amazing to be able to see the master pizzaiolas at work and really adds theatre to your visit! White marble tables are dotted around the dining area and the colour palette of teal, yellow and rose furnishings make the restaurant look smart and modern – I love it!
We took a seat in a cosy corner and glanced over the menu. The Jesmond pizzeria is home to the brand new Autumn menu which sees the return of the Calzone and if I was brave enough to take on the heat, I would have definitely tried the Calzone ‘Nduja!
We decided to share two starters between us and went for the Dough Balls with garlic butter – an absolute MUST if you’re heading to PizzaExpress – and some Halloumi Bites, which were served with an Italian tomato dip. The bites had a nice crispy coating and I could have honestly eaten another portion of them, they were so morish!
For main course, we both decided to go for pizza obviously! Steph went for the Sloppy Giuseppe which is hot spiced beef, green pepper, red onion, mozzarella and tomato on a Romana base, which is a bigger, thinner and crispier pizza. I decided to go for their 1965 original Classic base in the form of a Margherita. I know what you’re thinking ‘oh how boring’ BUT in my eyes you can’t beat a delicious Margherita pizza – they’re simple but significant! I did jazz mine up a little and add Italian Ham on as a topping though…and I absolutely devoured it!
Thanks so much to PizzaExpress for inviting me down, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and the new pizzeria looks amazing!
